Through a partnership with YouTube Red, Rooster Teeth begins pre-production on the follow-up to their first movie, Lazer Team.
On August 5, Burnie Burns and Gavin Free of Rooster Teeth announced that pre-production for Lazer Team 2 has begun. Back in 2014, Rooster Teeth crowdfunded Lazer Team through Indiegogo, raising over $2.4 million in their limited time listed on the website. After it’s successful completion, the movie was released in select theaters and became one of the first pieces of original content for YouTube Red.
“Thanks to the power of this amazing community and the support of our fantastic partners at YouTube Red, we are officially making a sequel – and it’s going to be even bigger, better, and Lazer Team-ier than the first one,” said Lazer Team director and Rooster Teeth CEO Matt Hullum in a post on the Rooster Teeth site. “There is so much more we want to do with this story and these characters, and your incredible response to the movie has made it a reality even sooner than we expected.”
In a statement to Variety, YouTube’s head of original programming Susanne Daniels spoke highly of the company. “RoosterTeeth’s massive audience on YouTube Red a fan favorite,” she said. “We can’t wait to team up again with this creative powerhouse and Fullscreen Films to deliver another hit to fans.”
Lazer Team is the story of four of the most very unlikely heroes, played by Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones, and Colton Dunn, each controlling a piece of an alien battle suit they found after a spaceship crashed in a field. Alan Ritchson appears as the original, intended wearer of the suit, only to wind up as their reluctant trainer.
Lazer Team 2 is intended for release in 2017. Pre-production has begun, but Rooster Teeth has released no other details at this time.
